Study Materials for the Arizona Insurance Exam

If you’re planning to take your Arizona insurance licensing exam, your next step is to study. There’s a lot of information to digest, and you need a score of 70 to pass the exam. The best way to prepare is to take an insurance exam prep course.

The Arizona Department of Insurance doesn’t require exam takers to enroll in a pre-licensing course. But not taking an exam prep course would be like trying to pass the bar exam without knowing a thing about law.

Here are some things to consider when deciding which exam prep provider to use:

  • Make sure the exam prep course you choose covers all the material in the test content outline. The Arizona Test Content Outline (TCO) is published by PSI Exams, the company that administers the insurance licensing exams in Arizona. The TCO covers all the topics you’ll be tested on. The study manual for the exam prep course you choose should cover all the topics listed in the TCO. Study manuals are usually split up into two sections: a national section and a state-specific section:
    • The national section covers basic insurance terminology and concepts that are applicable everywhere.
    • The state-specific section covers rules and regulations specific to Arizona.
  • Look for a demo video. If you choose an online course, make sure the company offers a demo video. That way you can see if you like their teaching style and approach. Beware of courses that don’t show examples of their product. Sub-par study materials are a waste of time and money. Look for a course that includes instructor-led lectures by an expert. Investigate the company. Ask how many years they’ve been in business and check their reviews and testimonials.
  • Look for a course that provides comprehensive chapter reviews and practice test questions. Make sure the course you choose offers comprehensive reviews for each chapter/section of material. It’s critical for you to be well-prepared to answer the types of questions you’ll see on the exam. No company can give you the actual questions from the exam, word for word. But they should at least provide you with practice questions that use similar wording and a similar format (e.g., multiple choice), so you know what to expect. Chapter reviews and practice test questions are the best way to prepare for the actual exam.
  • Put in the work. There’s no getting around it. Insurance concepts and terminology aren’t common sense. You must study to pass the exam. If you don’t pass, you’ll have to start all over again. Carefully read and follow the study guide your provider gives you. Put in the work, and you’ll be on your way to a lucrative career as an insurance agent!
