What Is a Casualty Insurance License?
A casualty insurance license authorizes the license holder to sell casualty insurance to individuals and organizations. Casualty insurance is liability coverage that helps protect a person if they’re found legally responsible for an accident that causes injuries to another person or damage to their property.
What Kinds of Policies Can Casualty Insurance Agents Sell?
Depending on your state, a casualty license will enable you to sell products like:

Who Needs to Carry a Casualty Insurance License?
All 50 states require you to hold a casualty license in order to sell or even discuss (e.g. customer service representatives) casualty insurance policies.
Requirements for a Casualty Insurance License
Each state has its own licensing requirements, and you must pass the casualty insurance licensing for your state as well as any other states where you wish to sell or discuss casualty insurance. Here’s how the licensing process works:
- Familiarize Yourself with the State Requirements: Each state has its own requirements and insurance laws, so you can’t assume that another state’s rules will apply to you. You must obtain a resident producer license in the state where you live and a non-resident license for each additional state where you intend to sell/discuss casualty insurance.
- Prepare for the State Exam: Choose a quality course, like those offered by America’s Professor, to help you prepare for the material you’ll encounter on your state’s Test Content Outline (TCO).
- Pass the State Exam: More than likely you will take you exam at a public testing center. Expect 100-150 multiple-choice questions. Test fees are typically $50-$100 per testing session. - Get Fingerprinted: Most states require licensed insurance agents to be fingerprinted as part of the background check process. A technician is usually on-site at the testing center to do this. In some instances you may need to go to a separate facility to get fingerprinted.
- Send in the License Application: Once you pass the exam you can formally apply for your license. It may take a few weeks to receive your license in the mail.
- Fulfill Any Continuing Education Requirements: Many states require license holders to take educational courses periodically. Most of the time this requires completing 24-30 hours of approved continuing education courses every two years.
