Life and health (L&H) insurance agents are in high demand. The job outlook for insurance agents is expected to grow faster than average through this decade and beyond. If you’ve decided to get your L&H license, congratulations on taking the first step toward a rewarding career.

As a life and health insurance agent, you will help clients find insurance products to protect themselves and their families in case of accidents, illness, or death. With an L&H license, you can sell products including (but not limited to):

  • Life insurance
  • Fixed Annuities
  • Health insurance
  • Accident insurance
  • Long-term care insurance
  • Disability insurance

You don’t necessarily have to work as a sales or customer service agent, but this is how most L&H agents start out. With experience and time, you may be able to move into other positions, including management roles.

Before you can start selling life and health insurance and related products, you need to pass the life & health insurance license exam. The exam is challenging, with tricky concepts and jargon you’ve probably never heard before. If you want to pass the exam on your first try, you’ll need to be well prepared.

Enroll in an exam prep course.

Some states require completion of a life and health insurance course before you can register to take the L&H exam. Even if your state doesn’t require it, taking an exam prep course will greatly improve your chances of passing the exam on your first try. It’s why exam prep courses are the gold standard for aspiring insurance agents.

Go with a qualified education provider—like America’s Professor—to ensure you get comprehensive study materials that include everything you need to know to pass your exam.

Map out a study plan.

Once you enroll in an exam prep course, review the materials and map out a study plan. For the Life & Health insurance license exam, you should plan to study for 35-40 hours.

It’s best to start studying no more than 3-4 weeks before your scheduled exam date. That way the information will be fresh in your mind come exam day.

If possible, spend a full week (7-8 hours per day for 5 days) studying for the exam in the week leading up to your scheduled exam date, similar to an in-person course. If this isn’t possible, dedicate 3-4 hours of study time per day/night, starting around 2 weeks before your exam date.

Test your knowledge with practice quizzes (but don’t overly rely on them).

Practice tests are great for gauging how well you’re doing, but they’re no substitute for actually learning and understanding the material. You won’t pass the exam by memorizing answers from practice tests.

The questions on the exam will be written differently than on practice quizzes, and actual exam questions are often designed to throw you off. You need to understand the material, so that no matter how a question is phrased, you’ll know the answer.

Test your knowledge after every chapter/learning segment to see how well you understand what you learned. Go back and review areas where you need improvement.

Know what to expect on exam day.

All insurance licensing exams are multiple choice and are administered via computer. Take your time answering the questions and read each question carefully and completely. Don’t spend too much time on tricky questions—you can always come back to them later.

If you take the exam in person, be sure to make travel arrangements in advance, if needed. Most states have several testing centers located in different parts of the state.

Review the insurance candidate handbook for your state to find out what you’ll need to bring with you on the day of the exam. Many states require two forms of ID. Here is the latest candidate handbook for Georgia, as an example. Be sure to find the handbook for your state.

If you take a proctored (monitored) exam online, find out the technical requirements and prepare your personal computer or laptop in advance. Show up to the exam waiting room early, and make sure to test your microphone and camera before the exam. Don’t wait until the last minute to get ready for the exam. Think ahead and prepare.
