How to Get Your Insurance License in Wyoming

Female agent offer insurance to young couple.

Wyoming is a great state to be an insurance agent. The cost of living is relatively low, and the state is exceptionally business-friendly.

With one of the lowest sales tax rates and no corporate income tax, Wyoming is the ideal place to carve out a niche for yourself as an insurance agent—and maybe even open your own agency someday.

And while the Cowboy State is famous for its philosophy of rugged independence, Wyoming residents and businesses still need insurance protection, from auto liability insurance to health coverage. That means opportunities for new insurance agents.

But to start selling insurance, you first need to pass the Wyoming insurance license exam. Here are the steps you’ll need to take.

Step 1: Decide which license you need.

If you’re still trying to decide which license to get, it helps to have a good understanding of the insurance products you’ll be selling.

Do you love counseling friends and family about investments, estate planning, and health coverage? If so, a Life & Health license might be your best bet.

Do you prefer talking about tangibles, like trucks, boats, and homes? If so, being a P&C (Property & Casualty) agent might be your calling.

Take some time to think about which products you’ll actually enjoy discussing with prospects day in and day out.

Step 2: Enroll in a pre-licensing course.

The Wyoming Department of Insurance does not require pre-licensing education. But you’ll greatly improve your chances of passing your insurance licensing exam on the first try if you enroll in an exam prep course with a reputable provider.

Most people enroll in an online course because it’s convenient. You can study at your own pace and set your own schedule. And you won’t need to take time off, travel, or sit in a stuffy classroom for a week.

Be choosy about your pre-licensing education provider. Opt for an experienced company that presents the materials in an engaging and easy-to-understand way.

Insurance concepts and terminology are tricky enough. You want an education provider that breaks things down clearly, so you’ll have no trouble remembering the information on exam day.

Also make sure the company you choose offers 24/7 access to streaming video lectures and provides a textbook, so you can take notes.

Step 3: Take the exam.

You’ve studied hard and the big day has arrived. It’s time to take the Wyoming insurance license exam.

You can take the exam in person or online through Pearson VUE (the exam provider in Wyoming). If you take the exam online, you will be monitored by a proctor throughout the duration of the exam. You must register for a Pearson VUE account to schedule an exam. Walk-ins are not available.

The exams for all lines of authority consist of two parts: a national section that covers insurance broadly, and a state-rules section that covers specific laws, rules, and regulations for Wyoming. You need a score of 70 on both parts to pass—the two sections are not averaged together.

Your exam will be scored on the spot, so you will know right away whether you passed. If you don’t pass, you can retake the exam after a mandatory 24-hour waiting period.

The Wyoming Insurance License Candidate Handbook has everything you need to know about how to register for the exam, where to take it, and more.

Step 4: Apply for your license.

Once you’ve passed your exam, you will need to get fingerprinted (required by the Wyoming Department of Insurance) and apply for your license, either at www.sircon.com/wyoming or www.nipr.com. Once you have your license, you can begin selling insurance.

Congratulations, you’re on your way to a stable career in the evergreen insurance industry!
