Which Utah Insurance Pre-Licensing Course Is Best for You?

If you’re planning on taking the Utah insurance licensing exam, you need to be well prepared. That means studying beforehand to make sure you know the material. You have three options:

  • You can take an approved insurance exam prep course online.
  • You can take a live course in a classroom.
  • You can wing it and hope you pass your exam.

We definitely don’t recommend the third option!

While the Utah Insurance Department doesn’t require you to take a pre-licensing course, doing so will give you the best chances of passing on the first try.

If you’re still wondering whether you really need to take an insurance pre-licensing course, ask yourself this: Can you imagine sitting down for your exam and being expected to know terms like subrogation or indemnification?

These are exactly the kinds of terms you’ll see on your exam. You’ll also be challenged with complex insurance concepts. Bottom line: You can’t pass your exam with “logic.” You need to know the material.

Here are things to consider when deciding which insurance exam prep provider to use:

Which is better: an online course or a live course?

Each has its pros and cons.

  • Online courses save you time and money on travel and lodging, and you won’t need to take time off from work or school. You can study at your own pace 24/7 and repeat the material as much as you need. You won’t have access to an instructor like you would in a classroom, but reputable online exam prep providers will deliver remote access to an instructor and/or a customer service team.
  • Live courses come with the advantage of learning in a classroom setting. This is a good option for people who are not tech savvy and those who like the reinforcement of having in-person instruction. A major drawback of taking an in-person course is that you’ll need to take time off from school or work to complete the course. This can be expensive, and for many people it’s simply not an option.

How will the course material be taught?

That depends partly on whether you choose a live classroom course or an online course.

In general, most exam prep companies have moved away from the “book only” option and use different types of interactive activities (videos, quizzes, final exams, etc.). This helps people with different learning styles absorb the information.

Most people learn best through a combination of video lectures and review questions/exams to test their knowledge. The advantage of videos is you can watch them again and again. If you score low on a review test, you can watch the video again to boost your comprehension and test scores.

If you choose an online course, make sure an instructor or customer service team is available via email or phone. Also make sure you are covered in the support area—there’s nothing worse than having a question that your education provider can’t answer!

How have students rated the exam prep provider you’re considering?

Reviews and testimonials speak volumes. Look for a company that has glowing reviews and testimonials. A quick Google search will tell you a lot.

Make sure to read several reviews. If a company has almost exclusively positive reviews, you can feel confident you’re making a good choice.

How much time will I have to study the material and complete the course?

Live courses are usually 3-5 days long. You’ll typically receive a textbook so you can keep reviewing the material up until your test date.

Online courses give you much more time to access the materials—usually 30-90 days. Many service providers offer extensions, some for a fee, some at no charge. Even 30 days is far more time than you’ll actually need. We recommend completing the course and taking your licensing exam ASAP. The longer you wait the more information you’ll forget.

How much does pre-licensing training cost?

Live courses are expensive—in the hundreds of dollars. And then there are travel and lodging costs, and time off from work.

Online courses usually cost from $75-$150. This is a small price to pay when you consider the main benefit—being well prepared for your exam. If you’re not prepared you risk failing the exam, which can be a major setback. You’ll have to reschedule for another test date, take more time off from work or school, and start the whole process over again.

Always do an “apples to apples” cost comparison of online courses—a Property & Casualty pre-licensing course won’t cost the same as a Life only course.

Also, know what you’re getting from an online provider. Do they provide you with a textbook and 24/7 access to online video lectures and other materials? Does the provider offer a demo so you can see if you like their presentation style? Do they offer lots of review questions and present the material in an easy-to-understand way? Do they have good reviews/testimonials? What about customer service?

Do your homework and choose your provider wisely.

Taking an insurance exam prep course is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure you have the knowledge you need to pass your exam on the first try.
