How to Make the Most of Our Courses

We want you to pass the exam the first time – and we know you do, too!

Here’s how to do it.

Our courses are different than all the others. Most pre-licensing courses emphasize rote memorization—not real understanding. America’s Professor believes it’s far more effective to actually EXPLAIN the material than dump a boatload of so-called “sample test questions” on students.

When you actually understand the material, you’ll be well-prepared for your exam—no matter how the testing company words the questions.

Each exam is different. The testing companies are constantly writing new questions, yet the concepts they cover rarely change.

We help you understand these key concepts to turbo-boost your chances of acing your exam.

America’s Professor doesn’t use and reuse the same test questions year after year, because we know that using the same questions over and over simply doesn’t work for insurance licensing exams.

practice standardized test

We have more than three decades of experience preparing students for their insurance licensing exams—we do everything possible to help students prepare well and pass the first time.

That said, it’s vital that you contact us if something in the course isn’t clear to you.

Students often call us for a course extension and are pleasantly surprised to learn that we’re standing by to answer any questions.

Don’t let any lingering questions you have about an insurance concept or terminology go unanswered—more than likely they’ll come back to bite you during your actual licensing exam!

So, what’s the formula for getting the most out of AP’s courses? Well, as our founder Jack likes to say, here’s how he would tell his own sister to pass the exam:

  1. Focus on what’s actually on the test. While the real world of insurance can change quickly, the material covered on exams is not as quick to catch up. We teach you the content required to pass your exam. Sometimes this means we’re even teaching outdated content. Yet, it’s imperative that you put real-world knowledge on the back shelf until after you’ve passed your licensing exam. Bottom line: If it’s on the exam, you need to know it, even if it’s outdated.
  2. Complete the chapters in order. Don’t read and watch the chapters out of order or skip around. Our textbook and course is designed to be completed from the start to the end, and each chapter is taught in a way that assumes that you know what was in the prior chapters.
  3. Get this over with quickly. Students who complete their courses in the shortest amount of time tend to have the highest first-time pass rates. Typically, students who spend between 7-21 days (a few hours a day) tend to do very well. The longer you wait to take the exam, the more details you will forget. (Note: If you need to reschedule your test date, do so at least 48 hours prior to your exam time or you will more than likely have to pay another testing fee.)
  4. Watch the chapter lecture videos. Our videos contain the most important information. To be properly prepared for your exam you need to watch each video from beginning to end. We estimate that the Chapter Videos are at least 10 times as important as the Chapter Quizzes. Often students read the chapter text first to get an understanding and then watch the videos. Be sure to always read Chapter Updates in the textbook (more on that below). Here are additional things to know:
    1. The testing company writes tricky questions—some with the word “EXCEPT” at the end, and others with useless information designed to throw you off. Watch out for this by reading each question carefully.
    2. You may be thinking that if you fail the first time, no problem, you’ll just take the exam again. Here’s the thing: Retaking the exam will not be very helpful, because your brain will have subconsciously memorized the correct answer. On a retake you might have a much higher score, but will you really understand the material? Don’t fool yourself—the key is the videos, not the questions.
    3. Our chapter quiz questions are nothing more than a sample of what concepts will be on the test. Focus on understanding Jack’s videos rather than memorizing answers to questions. This isn’t like those forgettable college classes where you could pass by simply memorizing questions and answers—the licensing exam is a serious exam with many thousands of ever-changing questions.
  5. Check for our updates. There will be updates or specific points we want to clarify inside your course. Be sure to check the Chapter Updates section of your course before you take your exam. If your exam is updated, we will rush this content to the Chapter Updates section!
  6. Contact our Customer Support. If you don’t understand something, pester us until you understand! Our Customer Support Wizards are sipping coffee waiting for you to call. Submit a question or give us a call (8AM-5PM MST Mon-Fri) at 1-800-870-3130. If those times don’t work for you, we will work out a time to fit your schedule.

If You Don’t Pass

preping for an exam on computer

In the unlikely event that you aren’t one of the nearly 80% of our students who pass the exam the first time:

Send us a copy of your score sheet. We can break down the test sections and give feedback on which chapters you need to review. Bad stuff happens, period. It is simply a fact of life that not everyone will pass the exam the first time, or even the second time.

Even though you may have had a bad test day, our courses have more than enough information for you to pass. There are a lot of reasons some of our students have to retake the exam (didn’t finish the course, bad test taker, first time test anxiety, slept on the wrong side of the bed, personal issues, etc.).

WE WILL STICK WITH YOU UNTIL YOU PASS! Please scan and email us your score sheet so we can break down the test sections and provide helpful feedback on which topics you need to review.

Work with our Customer Support Wizards. We can spot the specific areas where you are having trouble and help you better understand those topics. Clarifying just a few issues can make a big difference on your exam score.

Before you retake your exam: Review test topics where you scored well. If you concentrate only on your weak areas, you will forget the details of the other topics. Just because you scored high on a particular section of the exam the first time doesn’t mean you’ll do that well on a retake—review all of the material before retaking the exam!

It took 2 weeks to finish the course material before I took the exam. I passed the first time. Two days before the exam, I reviewed then re-took the quizzes. I wrote down the topics I was struggling with and used the glossary and the text to create new notes. All this while working 10 hour days! I will definitely recommend America’s Professor to anybody wanting to get their insurance licence. Thank you so much!

I studied for my TX General Lines P&C test for about 2 weeks, I had a basic understanding of all the quizzes and scored at least a 90 on almost all of the quizzes. Unlike others I did not have the time to read the text book, which got me pretty nervous. But I just took the exam today, and I admit the test was VERY difficult. The questions were similar to America’s professor quizzes but really grabbed at the small details some might not take the time to study. I managed to score an 88 on my first try… Read more »

Finally took my exam yesterday…got a 93%! This has been a long haul for me during this COVID situation, but this program is so awesome that I was more than ready when the time came! I followed the regimen, but did more like 4-5 chapters a morning. With my film crew gigs eating up study days, then my FIRST PearsonVUE venue informing me that testing had been cancelled AFTER I showed up I had to mentally gear up all over again! But with my random work schedule AP gave me all the time I needed, and I started all over,… Read more »

I don’t learn well from lectures it is a learning curve I have! I am really great at reading and taking notes and independently understanding the information presented. If I read ALL chapters, highlight and take notes and secure passing score of 90 or better on ALL quizzes will I still do well on exams or do I have to watch videos?

America's Professor - DCM
America's Professor - DCM

Hello Justina, If you read the chapter, take your own notes, and score above 70% on your first attempt of each quiz… then I think your method of learning is going to be sufficient. If you are scoring less than 70% (especially on the chapters marked as more difficult in the table of contents) then you really should watch the video lectures for that chapter. Also be sure to cover the exam updates inside your course. Our course were developed for students to watch the lecture and see Jack’s side notes and what he emphasizes, which aren’t are in the… Read more »

I have been in the customer service industry for 8 years and finally made the decision to step up my career and try another challenge in the field. Hello Carolina, We hope you also get those items out of our course! But, I will tell you there is a big difference between Test World and the Real World. Hi Trevor, I would keep watching the videos for the more difficult chapters (highlighted in your table of contents). Look over your course updates and ask us if you have any content questions. Be sure not to only study your chapter questions over and over again as that will only lead to memorization of our questions. It’s good to keep the content fresh! Good luck on your exam and let us know if have any other questions.

I am really passionate about passing this exam so by any means i will do what it takes to pass. I really enjoyed this AP program and want to stick with it. HELP!!! Lol
