How to Prepare for the Montana Property & Casualty Exam

If you’re thinking about a new career in the insurance industry, there’s no time like the present to get your Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance license. Insurance is always in demand, and “Big Sky Country” is a great place to be an agent.

Nearly 7 in 10 Montanans own their home, and the state’s wide-open spaces mean most people need cars to get around.1 As a licensed Montana P&C agent, you’ll help people secure the coverage they need to protect their most valuable assets—like their homes and cars—and comply with liability insurance laws.

Getting your Montana insurance license is the first step to becoming a P&C agent in Montana. To get your license, you need to pass the Montana property and casualty exam. Keep reading for tips on how to prepare.

Start studying early.

The Property & Casualty insurance exam is challenging and covers topics that aren’t common knowledge.

For example, do you know what a “contract of adhesion” is? Or which “perils” are covered on an insurance contract? These are the kinds of things you’ll need to know to pass your exam.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), in 2020 just 55% of test takers passed the Montana Property exam on the first attempt. Those who took the Montana Property exam fared, with a first-time pass rate of 77%.2

Give yourself plenty of time to learn and absorb the material. You want to find the “Goldilocks zone” when it comes to study timing. Start too early and you might forget the information by exam day. Start too late and you might not have enough time to learn the material.
Here are some best practices for when to start studying:

  • If you work or go to school full time, begin studying at least 2-3 weeks before your exam date, and put yourself on a strict study schedule. For example, set aside 3-4 hours per night for at least 2 weeks, for a total of 35-40 hours.
  • If you’re not currently working or in school, the best way to study is to mimic an in-person course. Study for a full week before your scheduled exam—for example, 7-8 hours a day for 5 days, for a total 35-40 hours.

Devoting plenty of time to studying will give you the best chances of passing your exam on your first attempt.

Remove distractions.

We live in a distraction-filled world, and mounting research shows it’s harming our ability to concentrate.3

Seek out a quiet space where you can study without interruptions, whether it’s an extra room in your home or your local library.

Try to remove all distractions. Smartphones are a big one. If you can’t power off your smartphone completely because of family obligations, at least silence unnecessary notifications.

Make sure your family and friends know when you’re studying and ask them not to interrupt you during that time. Take breaks to stretch and eat. But try to stick to your schedule as closely as possible.

Don’t rely on practice exams alone.

Practice exams and quizzes can help you figure out which topics you need to study more, but they’re not a comprehensive learning solution. They don’t provide the foundational knowledge you need to actually pass the insurance licensing exam.

Memorizing questions and answers from practice tests simply doesn’t work. Each exam is different, and no two students will see the exact same questions.

The exam is designed to challenge you and test whether you really absorbed the required information. The only surefire way to know the material is to study. Don’t rely on practice quizzes you find online.
