Requirements for an Accident & Sickness Insurance License
- Familiarize yourself with state standards: Every state has its own unique requirements, and you will have to do a little research to ensure that you can fulfill them. Don’t assume that another state’s rules will apply to you.
- Pass the state exam: To obtain your license you must pass a timed, multiple-choice exam at your state’s provider. You may also be required to undergo a background check. The exam will cover topics such as traditional insurance sources, reinsurance, risk classification, underwriting, errors and omissions, and more.
- Undergo fingerprinting: In many cases, there will be an area at the testing center where you can do this on-site.
- Apply for a license: After passing the examination, you may now apply for your accident & sickness license. You can expect to wait a few weeks before it comes in the mail.
- Satisfy continuing education requirements: Many states require you to take a continuing education course every two years or so in order to maintain a current license. Again, you need to learn about the rules enforced in your state.
