What kind of questions do they put on the Missouri insurance test?

All of the Missouri insurance exam questions are multiple choice. There are no fill-ins (no need to memorize) and no essay (no need to be ready to explain anything) questions.

For example:

Missouri sample question

A multiple choice test will usually test heavily on definitions (terminology) and numbers (dollar amounts and number of days).

The exam is drawn from a large pool of questions – you will have a different set of questions than the person sitting next to you. If you retake the exam, expect to see very few of the questions repeated on the next exam. Students report that the exams vary greatly in terms of the number of questions on any given topic.

Students report that about 1/3 of the questions are terminology (definitional) questions, 1/3 are number/day questions, and 1/3 are questions where you have to apply the knowledge to reason through a practical situation (story problems – usually short).

What score do I need to pass the Missouri insurance exam?

There are 4 basic exams given in most states – Life, Health, Property, and Casualty. In some states, the exams are combined (Property & Casualty). Some states have a Personal Lines exam for agents selling only homeowner or auto insurance.

In Missouri, you need a score of 70 to pass each exam. But, each exam consists of two parts – the “national” insurance section and the “state rules” section. You will need a score of 70 on each section – the two scores are not averaged together. In Missouri, you can pass one section (say, the national), fail the other section, and then be required to retake only the failed section. Some states require a retake of both sections.

Are questions grouped by category?

Our students always want to know if the questions regarding indemnification (for example) are grouped together. No, questions and topics are randomly scrambled, but that never seems to be a problem for anyone.

What is the cost of the Missouri insurance exam?

The cost is $29-$35 for an examination. You may take up to two exams for that fee (Life + Accident and Health or Property + Casualty). A retake of any portion is the same fee.

How many questions are on the Missouri insurance exam?

The Missouri Property and Casualty exam has  170 questions. The break down is 100 scoreable + 20 pretest questions on national/general content and 40 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on Missouri state specific content.

The Missouri Property Only exam has  110 questions. The break down is 50 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on national/general content and 40 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on Missouri state specific content.

The Missouri Casualty Only exam has  110 questions. The break down is 50 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on national/general content and 40 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on Missouri state specific content.

The Missouri Life, Accident and Health exam has  170 questions. The break down is 100 scoreable + 20 pretest questions on national/general content and 45 scoreable + 5 pretest questions on Missouri state specific content.

The Missouri Life Only exam has  110 questions. The break down is 50 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on national/general content and 40 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on Missouri state specific content.

The Missouri Accident and Health Only exam has 110 questions. The break down is 50 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on national/general content and 40 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on Missouri state specific content.

The Missouri Personal Lines exam has 136 questions. The break down is 75 scoreable + 11 pretest questions on national/general content and 40 scoreable + 10 pretest questions on Missouri state specific content.

Pretest questions do not count towards your score. You will not know what questions are real or pre-test questions when taking your exam. It’s very possible the pre-test questions will not even be covered in the Test Content Outline. It’s very important to know that these pre-test questions will be in your exam so you don’t start second guessing yourself when you see a question that you have no idea how to answer (make your best guess and stay calm!).

How do I sign up to take the Missouri insurance exam and where is it given?

We recommend that you call Pearson VUE (the testing company) at 1-866-274-4740. Be sure to call at least 3 days in advance of the date you plan to take the exam. The earlier you sign up, the better your chances of getting the test date of your choice.

Which Missouri insurance test is the toughest?

Each insurance licensing exam presents its own challenge. Between Life and Health, students say that the Missouri Health insurance exam is the more difficult. Health insurance policies are simply more complicated than life insurance policies.

The Property insurance exam is easier than the Casualty insurance exam. Property insurance deals with easy to understand issues – fire, flooding, earthquake, etc. On the other hand, Casualty insurance deals primarily with Liability insurance – protection against lawsuits. Casualty insurance is a more conceptual topic and one that is more difficult for students to grasp – particularly if you have never been sued.

The state portion of the Missouri insurance exam is very detailed and presents its own challenges. The state topics tend to cover trivial details relating to complicated state regulations. None of this is easy, but that is why we work so hard to make the material both understandable and memorable.

This is a challenging exam. Put yourself on a strict schedule as you do your exam prep work. Be focused and disciplined as you do your insurance test prep.

Will I have adequate time to complete the Missouri insurance test?

Yes. We have never had students say that they ran out of time to complete the exam. Most students finish in about half of the allotted time (up to 3 hours). The only students who ever report that they ran out of time were those who were trying to memorize questions in the event they had to repeat the exam.

Is the Missouri insurance exam still given by the “paper and pencil” method?

No, this is a computerized exam with the option to take online via OnVUE or at a testing facility (mentioned above). Virtually all of the physical classroom students say the proctors were helpful, the room was quiet, and the computer worked well. The proctors will give you the opportunity to complete a practice exam to learn how to use the system. When you are done, you will NOT be given a copy of the exam, nor will you be given the opportunity to review particular questions and their answers. The exam will be scored immediately and you will know your results when you leave.

For student students taking the exam online through Pearson VUE’s OnVUE be sure to verify your location/resources will work (Quiet, private location. Reliable device with webcam. Strong internet connection, etc.).

What is the best test prep method for the Missouri insurance exam?

There is no alternative to knowing the material. There are no shortcuts to learning but there are more effective and less frustrating ways to learn. We recommend that you follow a 4-step process:

  • watch and listen to the lecture;
  • highlight key concepts in the text;
  • review questions in the test bank; and
  • send AP an email if you have any questions.

Is there a course that includes property and casualty plus life and health?

Hello Gaye, No there is not. Property and Casualty are completely different from Life and Health so they separate. If you need to get both sets of licenses we usually recommend that you pass your Property and Casualty exam first then start on the Life and Health course. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks and have a great day!

The initial access is 45-days but we stick with our students until they pass their exam, extending their course for free until they do. I noticed you said “we” in your question so be sure to know that each student needs to have their own course. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Margie, Which license are you trying to get? A single-line license (e.g., Life only) would be $109 for a course, $39 per test and $100 for a licensing fee. A combo license (e.g., Life, Accident & Health) would be $139 for a course, $49 per test and $100 for a licensing fee. Here’s a link to our Missouri pre-licensing courses. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Most of our students have around 40 hours into a combo course (PC or LAH). Some students take considerably longer if they have a learning disability or English is not their primary language (terminology can be very difficult). Please let us know if you have any other questions. 🙂

Hi Sheila, We’ve had students all the way up into their 80s prepare for their exam with us and get their license. I think most of the time they have already found someone that’s offered them a job upon getting their license. So yes, I definitely think it possible for you to find a good fit out there. Good luck!

Hello Cindi, You would definitely what to take a prep course for the exam. Unfortunately, in Missouri we do not have one for you. If you search for a Bail Bond Insurance Course in your state I’m sure a few options should show up. For that exam you might have to take an online course but the Missouri Bail Bond Test Content Outline (TCO) provided by Pearson VUE doesn’t look too big so it should be a short course/class. Good luck!

Hi Kent, Sorry but the Title insurance exam is something different than the insurance pre-licensing exams we prepare students for. It is different from the property insurance exam. Pearson VUE has the Test Content Outlines (TCO) available for each exam and there might be some overlap but I don’t think we can prepare you for the title exam. I’m not real sure of a good course to point you towards either. Sorry we couldn’t have been more helpful. Good luck in your searches!
